New Zealand has thirteen National Parks covering more than 2 million hectares. (1 hectare is approximately 2.5 mile, N.Z.'s total area is 27 million hectares) On the North Island, Tongariro National Park offers an active volcano. The more diverse South Island has Able Tasman National Park, a popular kayak site, Fiordland National Park and the impresive Mount Cook National Park. It also has 20 Forest Parks that range out over 1.8 million hectares. In conjunction with these parks, there is nearly 4,000 reserves aimed at protecting scenic, nature, scientific, historic, recreational, wildlife, and marine life resources.
